How is a frying pan different from a skillet? Pans made of cast iron are typically called skillets, whereas their non-stick, aluminium or stainless steel counterparts are usually referred to as frypans. Skillets are also slightly deeper with higher walls, making them perfect for simmering, baking and cooking food with sauces. Shallow fry pans allow steam to evaporate more easily, which is perfect when pan-frying, searing and achieving crisp results.
